Proton Therapy

History

1946

Proton therapy is first proposed as a treatment for cancer.

1954

Proton therapy is first used clinically.

1990

The first hospital-based proton therapy treatment center opens, but due to the equipment's large size and high cost, proton therapy fails to be widely adoped.

2004

Mevion is incorporated and an expert proton therapy team is assembled with a goal to reduce the size and. cost of proton therapy technology and make accessible this important therapy.

2006

Mevion enters in a development partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop a high field magnet to reduce the size of the proton accelerator.

2010

Mevion completes the development of the smallest proton accelerator for proton therapy. 

2012

The MEVION S250™ Proton Therapy System, the world's first compact proton therapy system, receives US FDA clearance.

2013

The first patient is treated on a MEVION S250 Proton Therapy System at the Siteman Cancer Center, an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

2014

Mevion announces development of the HYPERSCAN™ pencil beam scanning technology, set to be the world's fastest and sharpest pencil beam scanning solution.

2015

MEVION S250 Proton Therapy Systems begin clinical treatment at another NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Jersey, and at the first physician-owned proton therapy center in Jacksonville, Florida; installation of the first MEVION S250 Series System in Europe is also announced.

Mevion announces its largest round of investment funding to date and the establishment of a joint venture to develop proton centers in the Chinese market.

Mevion introduces the MEVION S250i™ with HYPERSCAN pencil beam scanning and MEVION S250mx™ Multi-Room Proton Therapy Solution.

2016

MEVION S250 Proton Therapy System begins clinical treatments in Orlando, Florida and Cleveland, OH.

Mevion premiers the breakthrough MEVION S250i with HYPERSCAN and Adaptive Aperture™, up to 50x faster and 3x sharper for IMPT.

2022

Mevion introduces the MEVION S250-FIT™ Proton Therapy System, the first system to fit in an existing LINAC vault.
