Advanced Proton Therapy Coming to Central Massachusetts – Enabled by Mevion’s Locally Developed and Manufactured Compact Technology

Littleton, MA – December 18, 2025 — Congratulations to UMass Memorial Health on receiving approval from the Massachusetts Public Health Council to develop proton therapy service at UMass Memorial Medical Center’s Cancer Center in Marlborough.

Mevion Medical Systems has partnered with UMass Memorial to bring this lifesaving technology to the Central Massachusetts region – expanding access for patients who have historically faced long travel times to receive this specialized cancer treatment. Currently, across all New England, the treatment is only available at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Proton therapy is a highly precise form of radiation treatment designed to better target tumors while reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. For many patients – especially those with tumors near sensitive organs – proton therapy may help reduce treatment-related side effects compared to conventional radiation approaches.

The partnership is enabled by the compact MEVION S250i Proton Therapy System®, which reduces the space, infrastructure, and construction complexity that have historically limited proton therapy to only a few large sites. By removing these traditional barriers, Mevion makes it practical for more providers to bring proton therapy to communities that previously could not support it.

“Access is the story,” said Dr. Tina Yu, CEO. “For years, proton therapy has been out of reach for many patients simply because the technology was too large, too complex, or too difficult to place outside major academic hubs. Mevion has changed that. Our compact, U.S.-manufactured system enables high-quality proton therapy to be delivered in more communities, helping reduce the burden of long-distance travel and bringing highly advanced cancer treatment closer to the patients who need it. Expanding access to proton therapy in Central Massachusetts ensures more individuals can receive world-class care within their own community.”

Mevion is the only U.S. manufacturer of proton therapy systems, designing and building its technology domestically. This approach supports dependable serviceability, strengthens the local supply chain, and aligns with the needs of health systems seeking scalable, sustainable access to advanced radiation therapy.

Once operational, the Central Massachusetts proton therapy site will expand regional treatment capacity and help address rising demand as the incidence of cancer is increasing statewide. The project also reflects a commitment to modernize oncology care while improving the patient experience and reducing logistical barriers for families across Central and Western Massachusetts.
