On March 24, 2026, the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Cancer Network announced a significant milestone reflecting both clinical progress and expanded access to care. The team delivered the first-ever proton therapy treatment in the state of Wisconsin—marking a meaningful step forward for patients across the region who can now receive this highly specialized form of radiation therapy closer to home.
The first patient treated was a young adult with a central nervous system tumor. Cases like this underscore the value of proton therapy—its ability to precisely target tumors while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue is especially critical for complex conditions and for younger patients, where long-term outcomes matter deeply.
The program is powered by the MEVION S250i Proton Therapy System®, installed within the Froedtert & MCW Clinical Cancer Center in Milwaukee. The system’s compact design and advanced capabilities, including HYPERSCAN® pencil beam scanning, enable highly tailored treatments while integrating seamlessly into existing clinical workflows.
With this milestone, the Froedtert & MCW Cancer Network becomes the first provider in Wisconsin to offer proton therapy. In partnership with Children’s Wisconsin, the program will serve both adult and pediatric patients—expanding access to advanced care for some of the most sensitive and challenging cancer cases.
“We are proud to support the Froedtert & MCW team as they bring this capability to their patients and community,” said Tina Yu, PhD, CEO and President of Mevion Medical Systems. “Their leadership and commitment to innovation are evident in this achievement, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact of their program.”
